Studies climate impacts on forests, how forestry cuts emissions, and how the sector can adapt, providing evidence for policy with UK and EU partners.

Field Data Services

Provides reliable, timely and high-quality field data services to support scientific evidence and sustainable tree, wood and forest management.

Forest genetics

Leads tree improvement, conservation genetics and reproductive materials, with key roles in EUFORGEN and the Conifer Breeding Cooperative.

Human resources

Shapes people strategy, supports an inclusive high-performing workforce, and drives initiatives to attract, develop and retain talent.

Inventory, forecasting and operational support (IFOS)

Delivers software, data solutions and GB woodland statistics, blending GIS, data science and forestry to provide integrated analysis and evidence.

Land use and ecosystem services (LUES)

Provides evidence, methods and tools to help policymakers understand how land use and climate change affect biodiversity and ecosystem resilience.

Mensuration, growth and yield

Quantifies Britain’s woodland resources and timber quality to assess UK raw material potential and support producers in improving timber.

Physical environmental sciences

Researching how forests interact with their physical and historic environment to inform forestry policies and practices for sustainable land management.

Research Office

Supports project management, finds funding, helps build partnerships, guides bid preparation, and provides contract, finance and delivery support after awards.

Senior management

Silviculture and wood properties

Provides scientific evidence and knowledge exchange to boost the resilience of Britain’s forests to climate and biotic threats while maintaining productivity.

Society and environment research group (SERG)

Examines how trees and woodlands benefit society, and the drivers for their creation, management and use.

Tree health

Supports the forestry and tree sector by providing rapid advice and diagnosis through Tree Health Advice and Diagnostic services.

Urban forests

Provides scientific knowledge on the UK’s urban forests, covering all trees in and around urban areas to support policy, planning and management.
