Sonja has a background in Ecological Entomology and Veterinary Science, and before joining FR her work focused on the ecology of parasites in livestock. She obtained her PhD in Germany on the breeding ecology of biting midges in 2016.
Sonja joined Forest Research in 2022 as a Research Entomologist to work with several forest insect pests, including the great spruce bark beetle (Dendroctonus micans) and the large pine weevil (Hylobius abietis). Her research is focused on monitoring pests and developing biological control methods. She currently manages the FR breeding programme of the predatory beetle Rhizophagus grandis for the biological control of D. micans.
