Overview
As of early 2026, the UK has registered a total of 40 Genetic Conservation Units (GCUs) across 12 native species, which is a significant step forward in conserving genetic diversity in our native tree species and is testament to the positive engagement of stakeholders across the forestry and conservation sectors. However, much more work is needed to capture distinctive genetic diversity in other parts of our islands. This journal article discusses why GCUs are important and outlines how stakeholders are now collaborating to expand the UK network.
