Tom is part of the team establishing new research forests with funding from DEFRA’s Nature for Climate Fund (NCF). He is developing trials to evaluate genetic diversity in both native and non-native tree provenances. This includes participating in OptFORESTS, an EU Horizon 2020 project aiming to establish range wide trials exploring variation among and within keystone forest tree species.

These trials will gather evidence to support decision-making about woodland establishment under environmental change.

As the UK National Focal Point for EUFGIS, Tom is responsible for identifying and registering new Genetic Conservation Units (GCUs). The aim of GCUs is to maintain diverse populations across different environmental gradients in order to ensure continued evolutionary processes.

Tom has a BSc in Geography and an MSc by Research from the University of Leeds, with the former including a year studying abroad at the University of Queensland, Australia. He completed a PhD at the University of Leeds in 2022, investigating the ecological and fire regime responses of peatland ecosystems to climate change.

Tom joined Forest Research in May 2023 having previously worked as postdoctoral researcher at the University of Exeter and has volunteered in the conversation sector with the Cumbria Wildlife Trust and Northumberland National Park.

This project aims to establish a network of genetic conservation units (GCUs) across the natural range of European tree species to conserve the genetic diversity of forest genetic resources (FGR).
