About Zoe Withey
Zoe joined Forest Research in October 2024 after completing her PhD and a short postdoctoral research position at the University of Reading. Her PhD explored microbial community dynamics in communal sink drains, using metabarcoding and other molecular approaches to investigate community stability, resilience, and responses to chemical interventions in built environments. She subsequently applied these molecular approaches to investigating the diet of carabid beetles, expanding her research experience beyond microbial ecology.
Zoe’s research interests focus on molecular ecology and the applications of environmental DNA for biodiversity and environmental monitoring.
What Zoe does
Since joining Forest Research, Zoe has supported the delivery of three NCEA (Natural Capital and Ecosystem Assessment) projects aimed at large-scale biodiversity monitoring of multiple taxonomic groups, including forest mammals, soil invertebrates and fungi, and canopy and sub-canopy arthropods, using DNA and eDNA metabarcoding approaches.
She also assists with the delivery of other research projects related to eDNA and its application in biodiversity monitoring, including ToW and SWiM.
