Visit by Delegation from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) of China

Rik de Vrees gave a presentation to a delegation from the National Development and Reform Commission of China at a meeting hosted by EFI in Bonn on the 17th of October, to discuss Eco-Compensation and Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) schemes. The Chinese Delegation leader (Mr. Tong Liu) sketched the aim of the visit and the state of art in China. Ms Yuanyuan Song (NDRC) introduced history and policy of ecological compensation in China. Sven Wunder (EFIMED) introduced the topic based on his wide experience in Europe and beyond. Jiali Jin (Emily, Chinese Academy of Forestry, visiting scientist to EFI Bonn) introduced the CLEARING HOUSE project. After lunch, Georg Winkel (head to EFI Bonn) illustrated how PES are implemented as Innovative Mechanisms for managing ecosystem services within the SINCERE project. Finally, Rik De Vreese (WG co-leader in the COST action PESFOR-W) introduced the PESFOR-W COST action network and how the PESFOR-W action is facilitating the implementation of the Water Framework Directive through PES schemes for woodlands.
The Chinese delegation was very interested in the European context of applying PES by forest owners (public or private), the land and forest ownership structure in Europe, the cross-border implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the catchment-driven approach in the WFD.
COST Connect session on the European Green Deal

Launched in 2019, the European Green Deal includes a package of measures for cutting greenhouse gas emissions, preserving Europe's natural environment and investing in cutting-edge research and innovation. Horizon 2020 is supporting a Green Deal related research and innovation call worth close to €1 billion to be launched this autumn. This event focused upon work of six COST Actions relevant to the ambionss of the European Green Deal and feedback from COST Action representatives on the draft call.
