The National Woodland Bat Survey (NWBS) uses acoustic monitoring, machine learning and verifiers trained to identify different bat species’ calls in what is the UK’s largest woodland bat monitoring programme to date.
The survey, carried out in partnership with the Bat Conservation Trust (BCT), provides valuable data about bat presence, distribution and relative abundance across England’s woodlands. Fluctuations in bat activity can provide early signals about ecosystem health deterioration, land use pressures, and climate driven change.
