Job description
Professor Bianca Ambrose-Oji is the Chief Scientist for Forest Research, leading the organisation’s research strategy, driving innovation, ensuring scientific excellence and aligning scientific efforts with organisational goals. The Chief Scientist serves as the public face of Forest Research’s scientific efforts, liaising across the UK with other Public Sector Research Establishments, forestry and land use sector stakeholders, industry forums, policy discussions, and academic partnerships.
Biography
Professor Bianca Ambrose-Oji studied for a first degree in rural environmental science at Wye College, University of London, followed by a Masters in Forestry at Oxford University, and completed a PhD in tropical forestry and environmental sociology at Imperial College, University of London.
Having spent a period researching in agroforestry in Nepal and working in tropical forestry policy and delivery for the UK’s Department for International Development in Cameroon, she took up a post at Bangor University where she was the Director of an MSc course, supervised PhDs and continued active forestry and land-use focused research in 13 different African and Asian countries. She was awarded a Teaching Fellowship by the School of Agricultural and Forest Sciences at Bangor University in 2006. Bianca has been appointed as an Honorary Professor by Bangor University in recognition of her major achievements during her academic and research career including her previous role as a researcher and lecturer at Bangor University.
After eight years of working in this academic environment, Bianca moved to Forest Research, continuing her focus on the social and behavioural science elements of forestry. Her continuing interest working in an international context led to a Visiting Professorship at Wageningen University 2018-2023.
Before being appointed Chief Scientist she was the Head of the Society and Environment Research Group at Forest Research, where she delivered a portfolio of research projects focusing on land manager behaviours, forest governance, policy co-design, community involvement in forestry, public attitudes to trees and urban trees and greenspace planning. Bianca also co-led FR’s Woodland Creation research programme.
