Cooling effect of street trees in Bristol

In cities the climate is significantly warmer than in the surrounding countryside. This is known as the Urban Heat island (UHI) effect.  The UHI effect is caused by a range of factors including hard building surfaces which absorb and radiate heat and the design of urban areas which means they...

Valuing mental health benefits of forests

This research examines approaches to valuation of the mental health benefits of forests and proposes how monetary valuation of these benefits can be developed further. It examines metrics to quantify mental health impacts, methodologies to value changes in these and potential for incorporating associated values into natural capital accounting

The difference in roots traits under different tree species as influenced by soil type in forest ecosystems in Bulgaria and the UK

Lyudmila Lozanova, short-term studentship, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (2016) Summary This study investigated selected root traits such fine root length, belowground fine mass (biomass and necromass) distribution across different root diameter classes and soil depths, and patterns of temporal dynamics in root biomass and necromass.

    i-Tree Eco Evaluation

Forest Research has produced a study which evaluates the impacts delivered by UK i-Tree Eco projects on the awareness, management and policy of urban forests. The study found some projects achieved significant impacts including informing tree and woodland policies and justifying greater investment in tree management. However the study also identified challenges which limited impacts of some projects, including difficulty in communicating results and the low priority of urban forests for local governments. The study provides recommendations to overcome these challenges to help guide the design and delivery of future i-Tree Eco projects.
