About Olivia Azevedo
Olivia joined Forest Research in August 2024 as a Soil Scientist, supporting Defra-funded research on soil sustainability and forest ecosystem health. She holds a PhD in Environmental Science, with a thesis titled “Above and Belowground Ecological Linkages in Temperate Forest Soils,” investigating the effect of woodland creation on soil biogeochemistry across more than 40 woodland sites in central Scotland. She also holds a First Class BSc (Hons) in Environmental Science from the University of Stirling, where her undergraduate dissertation on soil respiration in a sub-Arctic tundra ecosystem (Abisko, Sweden) was published as first author. https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6220-8865
What Olivia does
Olivia works within the Soil Ecology Group, using eDNA metabarcoding and bioinformatics to characterise soil fungal and bacterial communities across forest ecosystems and land-use types (including short rotation forestry, agroforestry, hedgerows and woodland creation sites). Her work spans ITS and 16S rRNA metabarcoding, from processing OTU/ASV outputs and taxonomic assignment against UNITE and NCBI RefSeq, through to functional guild annotation (FUNGuild) and diversity analyses (alpha/beta diversity, NMDS, PERMANOVA) in R. She oversees eDNA data workflows from sequencing contractors through to analysis-ready datasets, contributes to the long-term ICP Forests Level II monitoring programme, and has worked on Defra-funded research into eDNA metabarcoding of forest microbial sources, pathways and sinks. She also contributes to grant proposal development for multi-year environmental monitoring projects, and is an editorial assistant for the journal Soil Use and Management.
