On Wednesday 17 June, in Brussels, Forest Research was formally admitted to the European National Forest Inventory Network (ENFIN).

The ENFIN is a collaborative network, including both EU and non-EU members, focused on topics relating to the coordination and development of national forest inventories.

The Network provides a platform to discuss the reporting of key forest metrics along with sharing best practice and technical approaches to surveys and analytical methods.

The ENFIN also plays an important role in creating data that is consistent and comparable across countries, to provide a wider picture of our forests.

Forest Research is responsible for the National Forest Inventory of Great Britian (GB NFI) which provides valuable information about our forests and woodlands and how they are changing. The data is essential for developing and monitoring the policies and guidance that support the sustainable management of woodland.

“We have been delivering the NFI in its current format since 2009, building a substantial and high-quality data set,” said Dr Chloë Metcalfe.

“We are excited to contribute our expertise from the GB NFI, as well as learn from other countries’ approaches, helping us to continuously improve our own national monitoring.

“We’re also looking forward to combining our data with that of other counties so that we can, together, improve international forest monitoring.”
