Urban forests
About Nick Porter
Prior to coming to Forest Research, Nick worked at SASA as an arable plant virology diagnostician. He has over 10 years of experience as an arborist and tree surveyor working for a diverse range of organisations, including the Royal Horticultural Society, Syon Park, Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh and the Woodland Trust. Nick did his MSc dissertation at Forest Research looking at Phytophthora austrocedri inoculum potential on juniper.
What Nick does
Nick joined Forest Research in April 2023 and is part of the Urban Forest Research Group (UFoRG). His work covers a range of different subject areas including:
- Understanding the benefits urban trees provide including carbon sequestration and storage, flood and noise mitigation, air pollution removal, temperature regulation, as well as the social and cultural benefits they deliver.
- The economic valuation of the benefits provided by urban trees.
- i-Tree Eco surveys.
- The study of novel tree species that can be used to help build greater resilience within urban forests under our changing climate.
- Measuring the leaf area index (LAI) of different tree species in the urban environment.
- Pest and disease threats to urban trees.
