Katy is a research entomologist, with interests in the life histories and ecology of forest pests, and forest insect biodiversity.

Katy has been affiliated with Forest Research since she completed her MSc project, on the role of mixed and monoculture stand types on forest floor biodiversity, at Alice Holt on 2012. She subsequently worked as a biodiversity project research assistant until spring 2013. She completed her PhD on the lifecycle and development of Agrilus biguttatus, and mechanisms of host resistance and annual growth, in relation to Acute Oak Decline in 2017.

The dendroclimatic and dendrochronological background to Acute Oak Decline

Using tree ring measurements (dendrochronology) and stable isotope analysis, the research aims to examine the stem growth and tree health histories of Acute Oak Decline (AOD)-affected trees, to look for evidence of predisposition to AOD, the impact of AOD on recent growth, and correlation with A. biguttatus attack.

Novel dendrochronological modelling demonstrates that decades of reduced stem growth predispose trees to Acute Oak Decline

• Novel dendrochronological modelling was developed to explore oak stem growth trends. • Trees with long-term AOD symptoms may have been predisposed many decades earlier. • Diseased trees struggle to take advantage of favourable growing conditions. • Historic episodes of stress may impact the future resilience of oaks to disturbance.
