Katherine joined Forest Research in 2023 to assist with delivery of the current Hylobius management and monitoring programme. The large pine weevil, Hylobius abietis, is a pest of conifer plantations which can cause serious damage on restocking sites, necessitating expensive control measures. Working with other scientists at NRS she will contribute to development of a new monitoring programme, testing the efficacy of biological controls and apply for funding to support the work.

Research topics:

Previously Katherine has been involved in the identification and study of a wide range of pathogens and pests in both agriculture and aquaculture. Most recently working at SASA (Science and Advice for Scottish Agriculture) developing molecular tools for the identification of insect pests and metabarcoding of bulk arthropod samples. Her main research focus was the insect vectors of the bacterial pathogen Xylella fastidiosa, improving knowledge and understanding of their biology and behaviour in the UK and the role they might play in the spread of Xylella if it were to be introduced.
