Summary
The regeneration of Vacant and Derelict Land (VDL) to woodland or other vegetated end uses, including community greenspace, offers significant potential for delivering environmental and economic benefit to society.
This project aims to build research capacity and expertise in the regeneration of VDL, to support the successful delivery of vegetation establishment schemes on these challenging sites.
Forest Research will be providing support to DEFRA’s VDL Discovery 2 Project, and will undertake a review of existing regeneration literature, with the aim of publishing updated technical guidance to support practitioners in this field.
This project is part of the Nature for Climate Fund.
Research Objectives
- Provide support and guidance to Defra on the VDL Discovery 2 Project, including peer review of the project’s outputs.
- Lead a review of existing Forest Research land regeneration literature, such as practice notes, best practice guidance notes and information notes, to identify and prioritise those in need of update.
- Prepare updated land regeneration industry guidance.
Latest Update
The review of existing land regeneration literature has been completed.
- A comprehensive handbook, ‘Woodland and grassland creation on sites requiring intervention: guidance for land regeneration’.’ The handbook provides detailed information to support those involved in the successful woodland and grassland establishment on previously used land including: Site selection; Planning and design; Site preparation; Establishment and Management.
