Summary

This research project aims to

  • Create a robust, evidence‑based multi‑criteria assessment (MCA) framework
  • Evaluate the benefits, constraints and risks of a wide range of productive tree species
  • Engage stakeholders across the forestry‑wood value chain
  • Co‑design criteria weightings and apply the framework
  • Derive a consensus shortlist of species for England.

Comprehensive costed proposals for targeted research in Years 2 and 3 will address identified knowledge gaps, supporting scalable deployment.

Ultimately, this coordinated approach aims to:

  • Drive diversification
  • Improve ecological and socio‑economic resilience of treescapes
  • Serve as a platform for decision support, education and training

This project has been funded by the UK Government through DEFRA’s Forestry Research and Development programme.

Research Objectives

  1. How do tree species perform against a comprehensive set of evaluation criteria throughout the forestry-wood chain, from plant and seed supply through to timber properties and end use?
  2. How do we weight criteria, and incorporate expert judgement and practical experience into the framework, as part of a robust co-design process that ensures cross-sectoral support for a shortlist of species?
  3. What are the scientific evidence gaps that must be addressed in Years 2 & 3 to enable national deployment of shortlisted species, and improve future prospects for other emerging species?
