Forests the world over, have long been associated with helping to reduce flooding. Most flooding disasters have been partly blamed on the effects of deforestation.
However, the emerging view amongst forest hydrologists is that forestry in general probably has a relatively limited role to play in reducing major floods.
An updated summary of evidence (PDF-29KB) from UK studies on the contribution of forestry to flood alleviation was written in August 2014.
This was followed by a briefing note (PDF-108KB) in response to the December 2015 floods in Cumbria.
