Forestry and Water Quality, Now and into the Future

Presented by Dr Nadeem Shah

Hosted by Dr Tom Nisbet

Please register to attend this online seminar by Wednesday 9 March 2022. Joining details will be emailed to you the day before the event.

What will the seminar cover?

Whilst the water draining from forests is generally high quality, forest management and operations can lead to water quality deterioration and alterations to water flows and resources. Such changes may have adverse impacts upon ecosystems, particularly in upland catchments that drain to waters supporting sensitive Protected and Priority Species such as Atlantic salmon and the freshwater pearl mussel.

Carbon transport is also a growing issue, not only in the context of carbon stocks and terrestrial carbon loss, but also drinking water quality and ecology. Concern has risen because studies have reported increasing dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations in some areas including forested environments.

In this seminar we introduce some of our studies on the effects of forestry on water quality and provide recommendations on how to mitigate negative impacts and realise benefits for the water environment. We also take a forward look to the role of forests in the hydrological cycle and the challenges of disentangling climatic effects from those related to forestry.

Who is the seminar for?

This seminar is aimed at practitioners and decision makers with an interest in forests and trees.
