GIS Technician

Posted: Posted 3 weeks ago

We are recruiting GIS technician roles, across the GIS and Data Services & Information and Statistics teams, within the Centre for Inventory Forecasting & Operational Support (IFOS) in Forest Research (FR).

We have 6 GIS technician roles required, to work across the GIS and Data Services and Information and Statistics teams within the Centre for Inventory Forecasting & Operational Support (IFOS). IFOS is an expert, customer focused, provider of forestry information, software, and service. You will be working with the latest GIS technologies and data, presenting an excellent opportunity to utilise existing as well as develop new skills. You will be supported in your individual development needs, goals and career aspirations.

The jobs will be based at the Northern Research Station (Information and Statistics Team / GIS and Data Services Team), near Edinburgh or at our Alice Holt Research Station in Surrey (GIS and Data Services Team). There can be some flexibility to work from our other UK offices for the right candidate.

As mentioned above, these GIS technician roles may be based at either of the FR research stations. At Alice Holt, Farnham, GU10 4LH or Northern Research Station, Roslin, EH25 9SY. Blended working gives the option to work some of the week from home and some from the workplace. Please be aware that these roles can only be worked in the UK and not overseas. See further details about our locations via this link.

Within IFOS, there is a focus across a range of GIS technologies and areas of work. You will develop skills across technologies and data that support core products, services and projects. All delivered to internal and external customers across the Forestry sector, with opportunity to focus on specific career development pathways.

The GIS and Data Services team manage and deliver an integrated spatial platform for forest and land management. This comprises ‘Forester’ web-based applications and ‘GeoStore’ containing detailed UK-wide spatial data. ESRI Enterprise, ArcGIS Online and open-source technology are used to deliver services from the platform to 1600 users within the forestry and land management sector. Increasingly, mobile and remote sensing technologies, together with data science, are being used to produce derived data and information products for our customers. Also, we support a growing demand from our internal and external customers for focused GIS solutions to meet specific needs.

The National Forest Inventory (NFI) programme monitors woodland and trees within Great Britain. It sits within the Information and Statistics team. The programme provides an extensive and unique record of key information about our forests and woodlands. It does this by means of construction and regular maintenance and updating of a digital spatial map of British woodlands. Using information from aerial photography, remote sensing and administrative sources. Also, this is enhanced with a large field survey operation with many thousands of individual survey sites. They cover a representative sample of woodlands across Great Britain. The NFI field survey is designed as a continuous survey of woodland on a 5-year cycle, with repeat surveying of most sites in each cycle.

Forest Research (FR) is the research agency of the Forestry Commission. We are a world leader in applied forest science. Also, a trusted and recognised provider of expertise, data, products and services for governments and the tree, wood, forest and natural resource sectors. Please explore www.forestresearch.gov.uk to find out further information about our organisation.
