 The Royal Forest of Rockingham, a medieval hunting forest, is formed from a beautiful patchwork of ancient woodlands and open agricultural land with historic and attractive stone built forest villages. Today the forest offers visitors plenty of choices and routes for walking, cycling and riding. The forest is steeped in heritage waiting to be explored. The Rockingham Forest is at the heart of the Forestry Commission's Ancient Woodland Project.
Mammals: The Rockingham Forest is rich in wildlife, from three species of deer to dormice. We have information about Roe deer, Fallow deer and Badger
Birds: Nightingales can be heard in some of these woods in summer time, as can many warblers, and you may also see various birds of prey, including the wonderful red kite. For live footage see Webcam link on the right under "Related Pages". We have information about Red kite
Insects and reptiles: Adder, grass snake and common lizard can be found in parts of the Rockingham Forest. We have information about Adder and Black hairstreak Habitats: A great deal of ancient semi-natural woodland, with plenty of ponds, wet areas and some remnant heathland. There is also wood pasture.
