Wildlife at Callan's Lane Wood

A newly cut coppice area with cut hazel stems bound and stackedThe wood is a small ancient woodland in an unspoilt part of rural Lincolnshire. This lovely little wood has a good hard track running through the centre of it giving all year round access for walkers and cyclists. The wood is gradually being restored to native broadleaf woodland under the 'Ancient Woodland Project'.

Mammals: Muntjac deer frequent the wood. You'll also find fox, weasel, stoat and rabbit here, (the rabbit being the food of the first three!). We have information about Fallow deer and Badger

Birds: Buzzard, sparrowhawk, and kestrel nest here, together with jay, and greater spotted and green woodpeckers. Less common are treecreeper, nuthatch, crossbill and siskin.

Insects and reptiles: White admiral, Essex skippers and small heath are some of the less common butteflies that make their home here. Otherwise, look out for speckled wood, ringlet and red admiral. Grass snakes and common lizards enjoy the grassy rides.

Habitats: Callan's Lane is a mixed broadleaved/conifer woodland. The ride edges have nettle-leaved bellflower and wood sage growing there, with scattered areas of bluebell under the woodland.

How to get there:
The wood is located 1 mile west of Kirkby Underwood, which is itself 5 miles north of Bourne, just off the A15.
