Archaeological prospecting in woodland using LiDAR - summary of 2007 survey
Wyre Forest During spring 2007, a Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) survey was undertaken of the Wyre Forest, West Midlands.
Whilst the survey was again flown to reveal aspects of the historic environment hidden beneath the forest canopy, the most striking feature shown was the geomorphological aspect of the landscape and the drainage of the uplands into the river Severn (see image). This 3-dimensional model of the landscape provides a powerful tool for analyzing the location of archaeological features in relation to the river system or high ground overlooking it. As with the 2006 surveys, a variety of archaeological features are evident beneath the woodland canopy, ranging from hilltop monuments to examples of former agriculture and mining.
