Forest Research 's international collaborations
Since the 1992 Rio World Summit, the importance of sustainable forest management has increased worldwide. In 2002, the Johannesburg Earth Summit underlined the international importance of certification and forest restoration issues.
In EuropeMuch of Forest Research’s overseas work is for the European Union. European legislators and research funders are focusing on the importance of understanding the links between global environmental changes and the sustainable management of ecosystems. Forest Research’s portfolio of European projects reflects these interests. Beyond EuropeOur other overseas contracts currently include provision of scientific assistance to the US Department of Agriculture on Sudden Oak Death. Individual Forest Research scientists can also provide short term advice and consultancy on a fee basis. In recent years staff have completed engagements in: - Africa
- Canada
- China
- India
- Russia
- South America.
Topics have ranged from seed propagation problems and control of a teak defoliator to an investigation of a specific tree decline and die-back problem in the Seychelles. Our expertise in the water storage of wind thrown timber proved very useful to French forest managers after devastating storms hit France and Germany. Overseas state forestry groupsThe Forestry Commission (FC) has Memoranda of Understanding with several overseas state forestry groups. For example, a memorandum of understanding with the State Forestry Administration of China underlines an intent to develop co-operative relationships between FC and China, and provides a pathway of communication for future research collaboration.
