Technical Services - Soil mapping and site inspections

Soil map

Soil mapping

Soil maps are created from field surveys and aerial photography interpretation, if available. They can be presented as an ArcView theme (shape file), with an attribute table including:

  • Forestry Commission soil classification ‘soil types’ and descriptive ‘phases’
  • Ecological Site Classification (ESC) - Soil Moisture Regime (SMR) and Soil Nutrient Regime (SNR) values, and Rooting depth (RD).

Other themes with specific attributes of interest can also be produced.

Site inspections and monitoring

Inspections can be carried out on sites to identify potential or actual sources of difficulty in establishing woodlands. These may include:

  • Cultivation and drainage issues
  • Species suitability
  • Nutrition problems.
