EU and OECD research programmes

 

To extend the value and impact of UK government research funding, Forest Research participates in a variety of European Union (EU) and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) research programmes.

EU Framework Programme

The current Framework Programme, FP7, runs from 2007 to 2013. Forest Research has participated in Framework Programmes since FP3.

European Co-operation in Scientific & Technical Research Programme (COST)

COST is a framework for scientific and technical co-operation, allowing the co-ordination of national research on a European level. Cost Actions consist of basic & pre-competitive research and activities of public utility.  All COST member countries and the EU can propose COST Actions.

LIFE Environment Programme

LIFE, the Financial Instrument for the Environment, co-finances projects in three areas:  LIFE Nature actions aim to conserve natural habitats and Europe’s wild fauna and flora, supporting EU Birds and Habitats directives. They support implementation of nature conservation policy and the EU’s Natura 2000 Network.  LIFE Environment programmes provide funding for demonstration projects and methods which address EU environmental interests and support EU 6th Environmental Action Plan.  LIFE Third Country actions promoting sustainable development in third countries.

Other European legislation and research activities

• Protection of forests against air pollution and fires are covered by the EU legislative framework.

• The EU Forest Reproductive Materials Directive aims to ensure that forest reproductive material supplied for any site within the EU is suitable for that site’s geographic location.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD): Environment Programme

The OECD is the main forum for monitoring economic trends in its 29 member countries, the free-market democracies of North America, Europe and the Pacific.

OECD Directorate for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries programme of co-operative research in Biological Resource Management for Sustainable Agricultural Systems also includes research into forestry.
