Tree Doctor - Background

Need for identification and diagnosis of tree disorders and diseases

Trees are affected by an increasing range of disorders and diseases, largely as a result of

  • Traffic between countries
  • Weather extremes
  • Changing silvicultural and cultivation practices
  • Effects of pollution, especially in urban environments.

To cope with this challenge, people working with forest and amenity trees are having to call on all available knowledge to identify and diagnose effectively, both for prevention and treatment.

Collaborative development

In the UK there is a growing demand for a simple, easy-access, user-friendly tool to help identify tree disorders. Similar demands coming from several different countries gave the focus for an international multi-partnership project, backed by the European Union, leading to a completely new approach to identification and diagnosis.

Tree Doctor is the result of a collaborative venture between pathologists and entomologists from Forest Research and internationally renowned centres in France, Italy and The Netherlands. Contained on a single CD Tree Doctor provides an innovative and user-friendly tool that combines effective training and diagnostic methodology with the latest available scientific data.
