Professor Sam Evans studied at Clare College, University of Cambridge where he gained a BA(Hons) and an MA in Archaeology and Anthropology Tripos. He was awarded a PhD in Environmental Sciences in 1989 and a second PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry and Ecology of Pesticides in 1994 from MURST, Italy. He holds post-graduate qualifications in Vegetation Dynamics (University of Pavia, Italy) and in Environmental Sciences: Pesticides (Catholic University of the Holy Heart, Milan, Italy), as well as a University Diploma in Modern Languages (Italian) from the University of Westminster (2001).

A past NATO Senior Research Fellow, EU Post-Doctoral Research Fellow and BBSRC David Phillips Post-Doctoral Fellow, has held Senior Research Fellow positions with Academic Status (Lecturer B) at Cranfield University and Royal Holloway and New Bedford College, University of London, UK.

He moved to Forest Research in 1998 as a programme leader, became Head of Mensuration Branch in 2001. He was appointed Head of Biometrics Division in June 2004.

  • Principal Investigator, UK Natural and Environmental Research Council (NERC) Centre of Excellence for Terrestrial Carbon Dynamics (CTCD).
  • Principal Investigator, European Union RTD project under DG-Research 5th Framework Programme “PHRAME: Development of improved pest risk analysis techniques for quarantine pests, using pinewood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, in Portugal as a model system” 
  • UK representative on the Management Committee of COST Action E43 “Methodologies and Standards of Forest Inventories” and COST Action E44 “Wood Processing Strategy”
  • UK/Republic of Ireland representative on the Scientific Advisory Group, ICP Forests – European Commission, Directorate-General Environment
  • EU and UK representative on the Scientific Advisory Committee of the European Community Forest Focus Monitoring Programme
  • Co-chair of the UN-ECE ICP-Forests Growth Expert Panel
  • Co-chair on the International Conference on the Forestry Woodchain, Edinburgh, Sep 2004

Sam also co-supervises PhD students at a number of UK universities.
