Bill Rayner left Newton Rigg with a Forestry O.N.D. in 1978. He then spent a period working as a private forestry contractor and Estate Foreman Forester before joining the Forestry Commission in 1981 as a beat Forester in Strathconon. Transferring in 1985 to Forest Research as a Research Forester based in Perth. In 1990 he took up his current post as a Forester / Site surveyor.

Responsible for site surveys, soil advice and fertiliser prescriptions.

Project and other work includes:

Development of practical courses to coach clients in site potential assessment
Joint programme development and implementation to digitise the Forestry Commission soil data
Assisting Forest Research Project Leaders in the practical application of soils data to modelling scenarios and their subsequent woodland application.
