Survey of Loch Arkaig Butterfly Reserve
The area around Loch Arkaig is a core area for both Chequered Skipper (Carterocephalus palaemon) and Pearl-bordered Fritillary (Boloria euphrosyne). Both butterfly species have been recorded in the area which has become a butterfly reserve. The larval habitat for the Pearl-bordered Fritillary has been identified as the National Vegetation Classification (NVC) bracken community U20c which is found mostly on the lower slopes of the open area. Protected by woodland, the Molinia caerulea dominated flushes, classed as M25a, have been recognised as the larval habitat for the Chequered Skipper. Changes in vegetation composition of the key larval habitats (M25a and U20c) will be monitored annually by Technical Services Unti (TSU) staff from our Newton field station. Regeneration of woodland and presence and distribution of plants providing a source of nectar for the butterflies will be also be monitored across the site.
