Impact of cattle grazing on tree regeneration
The aim of this project is to determine whether there are any differences in the density, species composition and levels of browsing by cattle and deer on young trees at Glengarry. There are three treatment areas:
- Ccattle at 0.1 ha –1
- Cattle at 0.2 ha –1
- No cattle.
Felled areas within each treatment type have been divided into three age classes to represent the different stages of vegetation colonisation. Tree species and heights, vegetation composition, and evidence of grazing or poaching will be monitored annualy. The Highland cattle are owned and managed by staff from Lochaber Forest District and stay in the treatment areas all year.
