Studying adaptive variation in Ash

NATIVE ASH. ABER NATIONAL NATURE RESERVE. NORTH WALES.Forest Research Technical Services Unit (TSU) staff from Newton have been working with Christie Elite Nursery in Forres to evaluate the germination and early growth of seed prior to the establishment of the major field experiment.

Ash seed of native origin has been collected from 42 stands from across Britain by staff from TSU Field Stations. These stands represent a sample of the range of genetic diversity within the native population of ash.

The aim is to establish four trials in contrasting parts of the country in order to examine the level of variation that exists within the native ash population and also to what extent ash can alter to suit an environment which is different from its origin. Since variation can also be expected at the germination and early seedling stage, the raising of plants for the trials in the nursery will also be part of the experiment.
