He came to Forest Research in 1990 as a Research Forest Officer at Newton Research Nursery, then transferred to the Northern Research Station in 1992 as Project Support Officer. He became a Project Leader in 2002.

He is currently working on a PhD with Edinburgh University entitled ‘The Demographics of Native Scots Pine Flowering’.

Current role

Programme Leader, Forest Management Division

Researching the implications of a changing climate on the ability of upland native trees species to regenerate naturally, and developing appropriate management prescriptions to enable managers to meet their objectives for Upland Native Woods.

Current programmes

Management of upland native woodlands
Programme Leader

Affiliations and achievements

  • Gained Certificate in Crop Protection (BASIS Ltd) 2001
  • Member of Continuous Cover Forestry Group

Research areas

  • Silvicultural systems, with particular emphasis on native Scots Pinewoods
  • Natural regeneration of native and commercial species
  • Control and management of invasive Rhododendron ponticum (L)
  • Age structure analysis of native woods
