Hugh Evans, Bsc, DPhil, FRES
Head of Tree Health DivisionDr Hugh Evans studied zoology at Cardiff University and was awarded a BSc (Hons) in 1970. He then went on to carry out doctoral research at the Hope Department of Entomology, Oxford University under the supervision of the late Professor George Varley. Immediately after completing his DPhil in September 1973, Hugh joined the NERC Institute of Virology, Oxford (now CEH Oxford) where he worked on the ecology and practical use of insect pathogenic viruses. He joined Forest Research as Principal Entomologist in February 1984 and was appointed Head of Tree Health Division in June 2004. Current roleHead of Tree Health Division Responsible for the Forest Research programmes of research into biotic and abiotic agents in relation to their potential effects on tree health. He is responsible for the overall direction and quality of research, which is responsive to the needs of a wide range of customers, particularly within the Forestry Commission. He is a member of the Forest Research Executive Board, with particular responsibility for liaison with research interests in Wales. Hugh also supervises PhD students, currently having one (Eligiusz Baumgart) at Imperial College, jointly supervised by Dr Simon Leather and Dr Donald Quicke. He is also the forestry assessor on the Advisory Committee on Release to the Environment and has carried out two major reviews on genetically modified biopesticides for Defra (see publication list).
