Sam Evans, UDip, BA, MA (Cantab), PhD, PhD
Head of Biometrics, Surveys and Statistics DivisionProfessor Sam Evans studied at Clare College, University of Cambridge where he gained a BA(Hons) and an MA in Archaeology and Anthropology Tripos. He was awarded a PhD in Environmental Sciences in 1989 and a second PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry and Ecology of Pesticides in 1994 from MURST, Italy. He holds post-graduate qualifications in Vegetation Dynamics (University of Pavia, Italy) and in Environmental Sciences: Pesticides (Catholic University of the Holy Heart, Milan, Italy), as well as a University Diploma in Modern Languages (Italian) from the University of Westminster (2001). A past NATO Senior Research Fellow, EU Post-Doctoral Research Fellow and BBSRC David Phillips Post-Doctoral Fellow, has held Senior Research Fellow positions with Academic Status (Lecturer B) at Cranfield University and Royal Holloway and New Bedford College, University of London, UK. He moved to Forest Research in 1998 as a programme leader, became Head of Mensuration Branch in 2001. He was appointed Head of Biometrics Division in June 2004. Current roleHead of Biometrics, Surveys and Statistics Division Draws together Forest Research’s work in the areas of forest and woodland surveys, remote sensing, statistics, data management, process and empirical modelling and ensures that: - Surveying and inventory standards, modelling, statistical and data management aspects are correctly represented in Forest Research’s research
- Divisional objectives of winning new grants/contracts, working in partnership with other organisations and achieving innovation and scientific excellence are achieved.
- As well as leading the work and staff of the Division, Sam represents it on the Forest Research Executive Board and represents Forest Research at the Forestry Commission ICT Service Board.
