Development of decision tools and best practice guidance for land regeneration

Summary

Site restoration requires key decisions to be made based on social, economic and environmental factors.  Effective regeneration requires prioritisation at a regional level.  In addition, decision tools based upon best practice guidance offer technical solutions to site specific challenges and opportunities.

Research objectives

Forest Research is currently developing a range of tools to meet these needs at the national to site specific level:

The Forestry Commission funding is from their Reclamation of man-made sites for forestry programme.

Forestry Commission policy

Use of land degraded by former industrial and urban activity makes an increasingly important contribution to the expansion of woodland. Trees planted on such sites offer immense social benefits in addition to the possibility of economic activity on formerly unproductive land. This programme supports the related objectives of the English Forestry Strategy and across Great Britain generally.
