Biological control for Hylobius abietis

Application of nematodes to clearfell siteForest Research Technical Services Unit (TSU) have undertaken large-scale field trials in Moray, Dornoch and Kielder Forest Districts as the project has developed, and INTERREG funding has been secured to further develop the project in Wales and Ireland.

Field experiments have consistently demonstrated that entomopathogenic nematodes can considerably reduce the numbers of Hylobius abietis larvae developing in stumps following clearfell. Expected level of control is 55-98%, depending on site characteristics.

Reducing the population emerging from these stumps will have two effects:

  • The intensity of feeding on the site will be reduced
  • Fewer insects will migrate to newly felled areas and the population within the forest will be suppressed

In 2005, 110 hectares were treated as part of the ongoing research programme in Moray Forest District and in addition, 70 hectares were treated in North Wales with help from EU Regional funds under the InterReg IIIA initiative between Wales and Ireland (Welsh European Funding Office):

We have also continued with small replicated field trials aimed at improving efficiency.

TSU have been heavily involved in the development of this project and have been responsible for contributing towards:

  • Providing organisational, administration and laboratory support
  • Designing treatment and handling systems
  • Developing application methods
  • Preparation of business plans
  • Producing a Demonstration CD and Information pack
  • Providing Seminars
  • Linking nematode treatment to the Integrated Forest Management programme.
