The scope of this research and expertise encompasses: - Research and monitoring of forest ecosystems
- Forest hydrology

- Land reclamation and remediation, including the re-use of waste materials
- Urban geography
- Archaeology
- Managing the Forestry Commission Meteorological Stations across Britain
- Providing laboratory and consultancy services to the forestry industry.
Protection of the environment, and environmental threats to forests have become increasingly important issues in the last two decades. Since the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and the subsequent Helsinki Conference in 1993, the requirement for countries to practice 'Sustainable Forestry' has been made clear. Research is vital into the ways that forests interact with the physical environment so that policy, guidance and practice in sustainable forestry in the UK can be based on solid scientific principles.
