Who can apply? Entry at Pay Band 5 and higher levels usually requires one of the following qualifications: a degree in a scientific, engineering or mathematical subject, degree standard membership of a professional institution; a Higher National Certificate (HNC) or a Higher National Diploma (HND) in a scientific, engineering or mathematical subject; or a qualification equivalent to at least HNC or HND. Applicants for Assistant Scientific Officer posts (Pay Band 6) should have at least four GCE ‘O’ levels or equivalent including English Language and a mathematics or science subject. What is the work like? Research scientists core work supports the forestry strategies for England, Scotland and Wales. To ensure the integration of forestry with other land uses, this work involves partnerships across several sectors, at both national and regional levels. We also provide research, development and associated services to other government departments and commercial organisations. Research areas include collecting and applying information about Britain's woodland resources, establishing woodlands on brownfield and contaminated land, developing a greater understanding of the ways in which trees benefit society, promoting environmentally acceptable measures of preventing and controlling damage to Britain's trees, improving silvicultural and operational solutions for achieving sustainable management, exploring genetic variation and breeding better trees, conserving and enhancing the biodiversity of forest ecosystems and understanding the complex interactions between forests and their physical and historic environment.
