Full/part time: Full time 2-year Fixed Term AppointmentExtension of the contract, conversion to permanency or transfer to another part of the civil service is possible although there is no guarantee. You will be required to work as part of a team which maintains and enhances the Forestry Commission estate holdings. You will be working towards NVQ level 2 Trees & Timber, and be expected to achieve NPTC certification in Chainsaws and Pesticides. You will be able to demonstrate a keen interest in working in forestry and, in order to complete the NVQ, you will have literacy and numeracy skills which will be assessed during the selection process. In addition to this, for the Machine Operator post, mechanical appreciation and aptitude are essential, as well as experience of working with heavy machinery or other skills that would demonstrate that this ability could be achieved. Duties will include using acquired skills and appropriate materials and equipment for the regeneration, protection and maintenance of woodlands and the construction, inspection and maintenance of recreational and heritage facilities. You will also operate and maintain available tools, machines and resources to required standards, ensuring that a safe working site and safe methods are maintained. The trainee Machine Operator will also undertake the NVQ in Trees and Timber, but will have an emphasis on machine operations. This will include operating machinery safely and efficiently, carrying out routine inspections and services, maintaining a range of tools and equipment and completing accurate records. The duties of the post require that applicants hold a full driving license. The ability to speak Welsh is desirable.
